Liposuction is the removal of excess fat from the body using suction.
The best results from this procedure are when it is used as a method to contour small areas of the body, rather than as a substitute for weight loss. Common areas treated include the outer thighs, stomach and flanks.
Liposuction is most commonly performed by Dr Lotz when combined with another procedure, such as a breast reduction or a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty).
Liposuction works best for patients with good skin tone, so that the skin will shrink up after the fat is removed, and not leave loose skin folds.
Before the
surgery
It is important to try and be close to your goal weight before surgery so that the final results are as predictable as possible.
During the consultation Dr Lotz will discuss with you the areas you wish to have treated, and the amount of improvement that can be expected.
You will be given an information pack on the day and a quotation will be emailed which outlines in detail all the associated costs of liposuction surgery.
The surgery
Liposuction is performed as a day stay procedure in an accredited hospital with a qualified and experienced anaesthetist. At the time of surgery, a mixture of local anaesthetic is also injected into the area.
Surgical procedure
A few small incisions are made around the area to be contoured, and a specially designed cannula (a large blunt needle with holes in the sides) is used to remove fat until the desired contour is achieved. The small incisions are stitched closed, light dressings are applied, and a specially designed pressure garment is applied to the area to minimise swelling and bruising.
You will be given an instruction sheet when you are discharged. Liposuction is not usually a painful procedure.
After the surgery.
Wound care and follow-up
You will be seen a week after the surgery to check how the wounds are healing. There will usually be some bruising and swelling in the area for a few weeks, and the small wounds can leak some fluid for the first few days after the surgery.
You can shower the day after surgery, but it is important the wear the pressure garment as much as possible. You will wear this for 2-3 weeks after the surgery.
Recovery
Most patients are back at work 1-2 weeks later and back to full activity in a month.
The final results are seen at about 6 weeks after liposuction surgery.
